A balance sheet, or statement of financial position, is a snapshot of what a business owns and owes on one date, and what is left for the owners. This generator lays it out in the usual order (non-current assets, current assets, current liabilities, non-current liabilities and equity) and checks that assets equal liabilities plus equity. If they do not, it shows the difference so you can find the missing figure. Download it as a PDF or an Excel workbook.
How to use the balance sheet generator
- Enter the business name, the balance sheet date and the currency. Tick the comparative column to show the previous year-end beside it.
- Non-current assets: things you keep for more than a year, such as machines, vehicles, furniture and buildings, at their value after depreciation.
- Current assets: stock, money customers owe you, prepayments and cash at the bank or in hand.
- Current liabilities: what you owe within a year, such as supplier bills, accruals, an overdraft and tax due. Non-current liabilities are debts due after a year.
- Equity: share capital (or the owner’s capital) and profits kept in the business from earlier years.
- Add the profit for the period. If you used the income statement generator in this browser, press “Import from my income statement”; you can still edit the figure.
- Check the balance message, then download the PDF or Excel file.
Why a balance sheet must balance
Every naira a business holds came from somewhere: from lenders and suppliers (liabilities) or from the owners, including profits they have left in the business (equity). So total assets always equal total liabilities plus equity. When a balance sheet you have drawn up does not balance, a figure is missing or in the wrong place.
- Assets higher than liabilities plus equity: often the profit for the period has not been added to equity, or a loan or supplier balance is missing.
- Liabilities plus equity higher than assets: often a bank balance or a debtor is missing, or a drawing by the owner has not been taken off equity.
- A difference of exactly twice one figure usually means that figure is on the wrong side.
The facts: what the rules say
- Under IAS 1, a complete set of financial statements, presented at least annually, includes a statement of financial position. From annual periods beginning on or after 1 January 2027, IFRS 18 replaces IAS 1.
- Your fixed assets matter for tax in Nigeria. Section 201 of the Nigeria Tax Act, 2025 (gazetted text) defines a small company as one with gross turnover of ₦100,000,000 or less a year and total fixed assets not exceeding ₦250,000,000, and section 56 taxes a small company at 0%. That definition does not say whether fixed assets are measured at cost or at book value; ask your tax adviser how to apply it to your figures.
- Depreciation reduces the value of fixed assets on the balance sheet, but under section 21(g) of the Act it is not deductible for tax; capital allowances are given instead. The depreciation calculator shows both.

Frequently asked questions
An income statement covers a period and shows revenue, costs and profit. A balance sheet is a snapshot on one date and shows what the business owns, what it owes and the owners’ equity. The profit for the period links the two: it is added to equity.

ereQa does not draw up a balance sheet. It keeps the records that feed one: every invoice with what is still owed (grouped by age on the Overdue page), every expense by category, and on the Business plan, supplier bills.
