What it costs
Free plan available. Paid from $9/month with full features.
Free but US-only payments. No African payment gateways. Charges 2.9% + 30¢ per card payment.
The difference
Wave only supports USD-based Stripe payments. ereQa puts your account details on every invoice link — your clients pay you directly in NGN, GHS, KES, ZAR, and more.
Wave has no WhatsApp integration. ereQa creates an invoice link you paste into WhatsApp — the way African businesses actually get paid.
Wave gives you basic reports. ereQa gives you a monthly financial health score, anomaly detection, and plain-English recommendations from eQ AI.
Wave doesn't support PDF bank statement upload. ereQa parses and categorises any PDF or CSV bank statement from any bank worldwide.
Wave's free plan only supports a handful of currencies properly. ereQa fully supports NGN, GHS, KES, ZAR, GBP, USD, EUR — with local formatting.
Upload your bank statement and eQ AI categorises every transaction automatically. Wave requires manual categorisation for most transactions.
Yes. ereQa has a free plan with 5 invoices per month and core expense tracking — no credit card required. Unlike Wave, ereQa's free plan supports African currencies and local payment gateways.
Wave is genuinely free for invoicing and accounting, which makes it the most interesting comparison on this list. The catch is not the price — it is geography.
For a freelancer in the US or Canada, Wave is difficult to argue against on value.
Wave's payment processing is limited to the US and Canada. Outside those markets you can raise an invoice but not collect through it, which removes the part of the workflow that actually shortens payment. Nigerian VAT is not modelled, there is no Paystack or Flutterwave integration, and there is no support for the record-keeping the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 and NRS e-invoicing assume.
Bank statement import is oriented to North American institutions, so Nigerian statements land back in the manual pile.
Pick Wave if you are billing North American clients from a North American entity and want free accounting. Pick ereQa if you are invoicing in naira, collecting through Nigerian rails, and need 7.5% VAT applied correctly — ereQa also has a permanently free tier, so the comparison is not free versus paid.
