How to Get a Tax Identification Number (TIN) in Nigeria (2026)

A TIN is now the key to a business bank account, a government contract and a clean invoice. Here is how to get one in a day, for free, without an agent.

A Tax Identification Number used to be something you got when a client or a bank finally insisted. Since 1 January 2026 it is a precondition: the Nigeria Tax Administration Act requires a Tax ID to open or run a business bank account, to be paid by any government body, and to appear on every invoice that charges VAT. The good news is that getting one is free, almost entirely online, and for most people takes less than a day.

Who needs one

  • Every registered company, business name and incorporated trustee.
  • Every self-employed person, freelancer and consultant who issues invoices.
  • Every employee — your employer uses it to remit PAYE, and you need it to claim reliefs.
  • Anyone who wants to open a business or corporate bank account.
  • Anyone bidding for a government contract, importing goods, or applying for a Tax Clearance Certificate.

If you run an unregistered side business from a personal account, you are still a taxable person and still entitled to a TIN. Getting one does not create a tax bill by itself — your income does that — but it does let you claim the reliefs and the small-business exemptions the 2025 Act created.

Companies: you probably already have one

Since 2020 the Corporate Affairs Commission and the federal tax authority have been integrated. Any company, business name or incorporated trustee registered since then was issued a TIN at incorporation, and it is printed on the certificate. Look for an eight-digit number followed by -0001. If your registration is older than that and you never applied separately, follow the company steps below.

Individuals and freelancers: the online route

  1. Go to the Joint Tax Board TIN portal at tin.jtb.gov.ng and choose Register for TIN (Individual).
  2. Choose how to identify yourself: your National Identification Number (NIN) or your Bank Verification Number (BVN). NIN is faster, because the portal pulls your details straight from NIMC.
  3. Confirm the name, date of birth and address it returns. Correct the address if you have moved; the state you live in decides which tax authority handles your file.
  4. Enter a phone number and email address you control. The TIN is sent to both.
  5. Submit. Most individual applications are approved within hours; a few are queued for a manual check and take two or three working days.

The portal issues a ten-digit TIN and a printable certificate. Save the PDF. Banks and clients will ask for it, and the certificate — not just the number — is what they want to see.

Companies without a TIN: the online route

  1. On the same portal choose Register for TIN (Non-Individual).
  2. Enter your CAC registration number (RC for companies, BN for business names, IT for trustees). The portal pulls the registered name and address from the CAC.
  3. Provide the details of a director, partner or proprietor, with their own TIN or NIN.
  4. Give the business phone number and email, and the date you started trading.
  5. Submit. Non-individual applications are checked by a tax officer and typically approved within a week.

Doing it in person

Any NRS office (formerly FIRS) handles companies; any State Internal Revenue Service office handles individuals and business names. Bring the documents below. Walk-in registration is worth it if the portal cannot match your NIN or your CAC record has an error that needs a human to override.

What to bring
ApplicantDocuments
Individual / freelancerNIN slip or BVN, a utility bill or tenancy agreement for the address, one passport photograph
Business nameCAC certificate and Form BN1, proprietor’s NIN and TIN, utility bill for the business address
Limited companyCertificate of incorporation, CAC status report or Forms CAC 2 and 7, memorandum and articles, a director’s TIN, utility bill for the registered address

After you have it

  • Put it on every invoice. A VAT invoice without the supplier’s TIN is not a valid VAT invoice, and your client cannot recover the input VAT on it.
  • Give it to your bank. Business accounts opened before 2026 are being asked for it on review.
  • Give it to employers and clients who deduct withholding tax, so the credit lands on your file rather than in limbo.
  • Check it once a year on the verification portal to confirm your tax office and status are current — see how to verify a TIN.

Common problems

“NIN not found”

Your NIMC record has a name or date of birth that differs from what you typed, or the NIN has not yet synced. Retype exactly as on your NIN slip, including middle names. If it still fails, register with BVN instead.

“TIN already exists”

You were registered before, usually by an employer. Use the verification portal to retrieve the existing number by phone number or NIN rather than applying again; duplicate TINs cause problems later with tax clearance.

Wrong tax office

Your file sits with the state where you were registered. If you have moved, ask the new state’s revenue service to transfer it. Filing with the wrong state does not count.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a TIN free in Nigeria?

Yes. Registration through the Joint Tax Board portal or at a tax office costs nothing. Anyone charging a fee is an agent adding a service charge, not the government.

How long does it take to get a TIN?

Online applications for individuals are often approved the same day and rarely take more than a few working days. Companies registered with the CAC since 2020 already have one printed on their certificate of incorporation.

Do I need a TIN to open a business bank account?

Yes. Under the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 a Tax ID is required to open or continue operating a business bank account, and banks are applying it.

What does a Nigerian TIN look like?

Individual TINs issued through the JTB are ten digits. Company TINs issued through FIRS, now the NRS, are typically eight digits followed by -0001.

Is a TIN the same as a Tax ID under the new law?

In practice yes. The Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 uses the term Tax ID. Existing TINs remain valid; you do not need to re-register.
